Philosophy and Leadership
The philosophy of Warrington Soccer Club’s travel program is focused on Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD). LTAD is a multi-faceted process that encompass the technical, tactical, physical, and psychological dimensions of play. In the early years at the Academy ages (u9/2011 and u10/2010 for the 2019-20 season), motor and technical development are the most critical elements. As the player grows, the physical and tactical dimensions assume more importance. Our entire travel program is structured on this model, and at each age group you can be assured your child will receive age-appropriate soccer instruction and training.
Leadership of the travel program is overseen by our outstanding Directors of Coaching, Paul Centofanti (DOC u11 and older) and Neil Smart (DOC u10 and younger). The Club offers a full range of programs that can meet the needs of players at any level of play - from beginner to premier. The primary difference between travel and intramural is the level of commitment and competition.
Ages, Tryouts, and Schedule
The Warrington Soccer Travel Program is open to all players u9 through u19.
Tryouts are generally held in April or May for the travel season beginning in the fall. They are advertised on our website and social media outlets. Additionally, the club will send an email notification to all registered players in a specific age group advising of their age group’s tryout times. The Club has historically fielded at least two teams each for Girls and Boys at the u9 level and above.
Travel teams stay together through the full Travel Soccer Season, and begin practicing once or twice a week over the summer in preparation for their tournament schedule and fall league games. Unique to the u9 and u10 Academy teams and in line with our travel program philosophy, our Club has a policy requiring all players to receive at least 50% playing time in games unless there is a specific issue that has been discussed with the parents such as an injury, discipline, etc.
The Travel Soccer Season runs from fall to spring similar to a school year, however age groups are determined by birth year. The Warrington Soccer Club Travel program starts at the u9 level which includes children born in 2011 and 2012 for the 2019-20 travel season. The Fall Season runs from late August until early December (weather permitting). An indoor Winter Season is at the discretion of the teams and their coaches and will typically begin right after New Year’s Day. Spring Season begins in late March or early April. Teams will play in one of several local or regional leagues depending on the age and ability of the players. Most coaches will also play in several tournaments each season which often coincide with holiday weekends such as Labor Day and Columbus Day.
Travel Teams typically begin playing in the Inter-County Youth Soccer League (ICSL) which covers an area from the Delaware River to the east, King of Prussia to the west, Northeast Philadelphia to the south, and Buckingham and Quakertown to the northeast and northwest. The longest trip is usually not more than an hour. In addition, we have teams in the Philadelphia Area Girls Soccer league (PAGS), Delco Soccer League, Eastern Development Program (EDP), and Rock Soccer League. Teams play in leagues appropriate to their age group, ability, and designation based on the determination of the Director of Coaching and the team’s coach.
Team Designations and Coaches
Warrington Soccer Club offers the FC Warrington Premier designation to selected u11 teams and older that compete at the highest levels in the most competitive leagues in the country. Travel Competitive teams offer a more competitive environment than intramural can provide, and are similar to a traditional travel club program. This designation is available to all u11 teams and older.
For u9 and u10 travel teams, our Academy Program offers a more competitive environment than intramural can offer, but is designed and coordinated by the Club to ease the transition to travel play for these youngest players. And while our Warrington Futures program does not participate as a travel team, it is the Club’s entrance point for LTAD for players looking to advance to the next level of their soccer development with an eye towards travel team play at the u9 age group. Please see the team designation program details pages for more information about what each offers. For those looking for a u8 travel team, please read Warrington Soccer Club’s Statement on Under 8 Travel Teams from our Board of Directors and Directors of Coaching.
It is the commitment and excellence of our coaches and DOCs which allows for our structured approach to LTAD, and focus on the individual player. All of our coaches are selected after an interview process and approval by the Board of Directors in consultation with the Directors of Coaching. Most have either significant playing and/or coaching experience with many holding advanced state and national soccer coaching licenses. All new coaches commit to the Club to pursue licensure if they do not already hold a license.
Costs and Commitments
Finally, Warrington Soccer Club attempts to provide a cost-effective and reasonable price for all of our soccer programs. We offer certain discounts and financial aid, but Travel costs are necessarily higher than for Intramural play. For the u9 and u10 Academy teams there is an all-inclusive price set at $925 for the 2019-20 season. There is a registration fee of $425 for the 2019-20 season for u11 teams and above which covers some non-playing expenditures. Some of these older teams may also choose to pay for a professional coach. The balance of the costs are borne entirely by the individual teams and will vary by team. A combination of fundraisers and the collection of additional funds by the individual teams will cover the cost of leagues, tournaments, gear, and other operations for that team. Please see the Travel Program Costs page for details.
It is an individual decision as to whether your child wants to play at the travel level. Both our Travel and Intramural programs are well run, and provide good skill and personal development opportunities. If your child has played intramural before and done well, or is just an all around good athlete they will probably do well in the travel tryouts. The coaches will work with the team to develop individual soccer skills, and the teamwork necessary to be successful on the field.
If you have any questions about the program, please do not hesitate to contact our individual team coaches, Directors of Coaching, or the Travel Coordinator.
To our loyal membership, past and present, thank you for supporting our club, and thank you for your time to all who are considering Warrington Soccer Club; see you on the pitch.
